Edina Mayor Jim Hovland said Tuesday he will become a candidate as a Democrat in the Third Congressional District race to replace retiring nine-term Republican Jim Ramstad.
Edina Mayor Jim Hovland said Tuesday he will become a candidate as a Democrat in the Third Congressional District race to replace retiring nine-term Republican Jim Ramstad.
Holvand, a former Republican and a Minneapolis attorney, recently announced his conversion to the DFL Party and embarked on what he called a listening tour of the district to determine if he might be a viable candidate. Hovland said he was particularly encouraged by the reception he received at a recent DFL Central Committee meeting.
Hovland made an announcement to the state Senate District recently and will formally file papers as a candidate within the next few days, he said. A formal announcement might come after Thanksgiving, he said.
Hovland joins DFLers state Sen. Terri Bonoff and attorney and Iraq war veteran Ashwin Madia in the race. State Rep. Erik Paulsen is the only Republican to take formal steps to become a candidate.
