Convention-goers and local residents in the Twin Cities didn't ride as many borrowed bikes as their counterparts in Denver but they went farther per ride, according to results from the convention-week bike-lending program sponsored by Humana, the health insurance agency, and Bikes Belong, a bike advocacy group.
The groups provided 1,000 bikes at key locations around the host cities for the use of conventioneers, members of the media and others. The idea was to get policymakers and operatives to recognize the value of bikes for transportation as well as recreation.
Rides during the Republican National Convention averaged 7.7 miles, not quite enough to get between downtowns. Those in Denver for the Democratic Convention averaged 4.8, suggesting riders weren't heading for the mountains.
RNC riders and Humana also raised $151,414 for Hurricane Gustav relief.
