Ramsey County sheriff predicts $2 million tab during convention

Last update: June 26, 2008 - 11:26 PM

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office figures it's going to spend about $2 million to help the city of St. Paul with booking, detention and security services during the Republican National Convention, according to agenda documents made public Thursday.

The Ramsey County Board will be asked on Tuesday to approve the joint-powers agreement with the city.

The actual agreement document and itemized budget of county staff and capital costs were not made public. The county clerk said the documents aren't public because they fall under protected security information in the Data Practices Act. Two other agreements regarding juvenile detention and dispatch services are still being negotiated.

The amount, not to exceed $2,010,555.09, should be completely reimbursed by the $50 million federal security grant that St. Paul received to cover security costs during the event. The county expects to be notified by the city of services that wouldn't be reimbursed and would allow the sheriff to cut or eliminate such services.

The Republican National Convention will be held Sept. 1-4 at the Xcel Energy Center.
