ST. PAUL, Minn. - Retiring U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad lashed out at Democrat Ashwin Madia on Tuesday over attacks on Madia's opponent, Republican Erik Paulsen.
Madia and Paulsen are running to succeed Ramstad in Minnesota's suburban 3rd District, which includes most of the western suburbs of Minneapolis. Ramstad, a Republican who represented the district for 18 years, is heading Paulsen's campaign.
Holding up Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee mailing that links Paulsen to a Las Vegas strip club where another Republican raised campaign money, Ramstad accused Madia and his allies of engaging in "gutter politics" to smear Paulsen.
"I've never seen such scurrilous pieces," Ramstad said at a Capitol news conference.
Madia's campaign did not return phone messages from The Associated Press. A spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had no immediate comment.
Ramstad didn't directly answer a question about a new TV ad from Paulsen's campaign that accuses Madia of lying about his vote for president in 2000.
Paulsen said his ads criticize Madia to point out the differences between the two candidates.
Independence Party candidate David Dillon is also in the race.
