Brown College has lost its commencement speaker tonight to the financial industry bailout bill before the Senate.

Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., a Brown alumnus in broadcasting, was forced to cancel his appearance at the ceremony at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul because he needs to be in Washington for the Senate vote this evening, the school announced this afternoon.

Stepping in for Hagel will be Lou Carbone, founder and CEO of Experience Engineering, a Twin Cities consulting firm that specializes in "managing the customer experience."

Hagel, 61, also had been scheduled to speak earlier today to students, faculty and staff during an informal open forum on its Mendota Heights campus. He also was slated to be formally added to the Brown College Radio Broadcasting Wall of Fame.

The school said it intends to reschedule Hagel for a commencement in early 2009.

Brown offers programs in criminal justice, broadcasting, business management, design, and technology.
