PHOENIX — Phoenix police say an officer fatally wounded an 18-year-old soldier clad in fatigues who shot a young girl as he tried to get into her home.

Authorities say William R. Osterlind fired his weapon Tuesday, wounding a 12-year-old girl on the other side of the home's door. That's when the officer shot the soldier who was home on leave.

Police say the girl suffered a non-life-threatening wound to her leg.

Authorities say they tried to stop Osterlind from entering the home after a 14-year-old girl, the 12-year-old's sister, called 911 to say she was fearful of him.

Police say there had been inappropriate contact between the man and the older girl, who escaped injury.

Police Sgt. Trent Crump says Osterlind had just completed Army basic training.
