Minnesota's state government shut down on July 1, at an impasse over its $5 billion deficit. The vital numbers:

$30 billion - State spending the last two years [ending June 30, 2011], not including one-time federal stimulus dollars and shifted education funds

$32.4 billion - State spending the last two years [ending June 30, 2011], including one-time federal stimulus dollars but not shifted education funds

$34 billion - State economist projection of total state revenue for next two years

$34 billion - Republican budget, vetoed by Gov. Dayton

$36 billion - Gov. Dayton's second budget offer in May 2011

$37 billion - Gov. Dayton's detailed February 2011 recommendation

$39 billion - Forecasted cost of state government the next two years [through June 30, 2013]
