Election Day: What to know before casting your ballot

Last update: November 2, 2009 - 7:38 PM

Today is Election Day, with a number of municipal and school board races on the ballot.

Minneapolis will make a foray into ranked-choice voting; St. Paul voters will decide whether to install that system for future elections and will be electing a mayor and school board members.

Other city and school board races, as well as some referendums, will be taking place in the metro area and across Minnesota.

SOME ELECTION DAY BASICS:

Who can vote? Generally speaking, anyone who is a U.S. citizen, is at least 18 years old and has lived in Minnesota for 20 days immediately before today's election is eligible to vote.

When to vote: Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Where to vote: For your polling place, contact the Secretary of State's office -- 651-215-1440 or www.sos.state.mn.us -- or go to the Star Tribune's online Voter's Guide at www.startribune.com.

To register on Election Day: If you are not registered at your current address, you may register at your polling place today. To do so, you must provide proof of your identity and where you live. A valid Minnesota driver's license, Minnesota learner's permit or Minnesota identification card (or receipt for any of these) with your current name and address in the precinct will do the trick. There are also other ways to meet the requirement; you can find that information in a number of places, including the Secretary of State's office and the Star Tribune's online Voter's Guide.

Also, the Star Tribune's Whistleblower will be at the polls -- checking reports of malfunctioning voting machines, voter registration problems or other issues. If you experience problems, send Whistleblower an e-mail at: whistleblower@startribune.com
