Obama's St. Paul offices hit by vandals

Last update: August 24, 2008 - 10:48 PM

Vandals broke three plate-glass windows and a glass door early Sunday at presidential candidate Barack Obama's state headquarters in St. Paul.

The vandalism occurred at 1:13 a.m. in the 700 block of Raymond Avenue. Paint was splattered inside and outside the building, police said.

An employee was in the basement at the time, said St. Paul police spokesman Peter Panos. He heard the glass shattering, but did not see anyone, Panos said. The employee was unharmed.

No video surveillance was found at nearby businesses, Panos said.

"We're thinking this is just general vandalism," he said.

Obama's campaign has 11 offices statewide, said Nick Kimball, spokesman for Obama's Minnesota campaign. The other offices were not vandalized, he said.

The door was replaced Sunday, but the three windows remained boarded up and might be replaced Monday, Kimball said.

"Everyone's safe, which we're thankful for," he said. "Beyond that, we're not too concerned."

The incident led authorities to check offices for presumed Republican presidential nominee John McCain, and U.S. Senate candidates Norm Coleman and Al Franken. No other vandalism was found, Panos said.

There are no suspect descriptions in the case. Anyone with information can call police at 651-291-1111.
