John Dean among Watergate figures speaking in Minneapolis

Last update: April 1, 2008 - 7:39 AM

John Dean and three others connected to the Watergate scandal will participate in a University of St. Thomas Law School forum Wednesday.

At "Watergate Revisited: The Ethics of the Lawyers," the four will discuss what the legal profession did and did not learn from the scandal that brought down the Richard Nixon presidency.

This will mark the first joint public appearance for Watergate defendants Dean and Bud Krogh since they served as attorneys in the White House more than 30 years ago. Also appearing will be former prosecutors Jill Wine-Banks and Charles Breyer.

The forum, hosted by the School of Law's Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership in the Professions, will run from 4-6:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Schulze Grand Atrium of the School of Law building, 11th Street and Harmon Place in downtown Minneapolis.

The most notable of the speakers is Dean. The former counsel to Nixon pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obstruct justice and was the government's star witness in the Watergate trial of former Attorney General John Mitchell, and former top Nixon aides H.R. (Bob) Haldeman and John Ehrlichman. He offered one of the defining moments in testimony before Congress, when he said that he had warned Nixon that the Watergate scandal was "a cancer growing on the presidency."

Registration for the forum is open to the public for $25; students will be admitted for free. Seating is limited.
