Nov. 2: After a long night of counting, DFLer Mark Dayton leads Republican Tom Emmer by less than 1/2 of 1 percentage point, triggering an automatic recount for the second election cycle in a row.

Nov. 5: The state's 2.1 million ballots are put under 24-hour guard while local election officials begin recounting.

Nov. 17: Emmer petitions the state Supreme Court, arguing that local officials failed to properly reconcile the number of votes with registered voters.

Nov. 22: Supreme Court rejects Emmer's argument, saying it will issue a written opinion later.

Dec. 8: With a state-certified vote showing him trailing by 8,770, Emmer concedes.

Jan. 3: Dayton will be inaugurated.
