The money may be flowing through Rep. Michele Bachmann's sixth district, but the heavy Minnesota Republican artillery is zeroing in on the first district in southern Minnesota, where Randy Demmer is trying to unseat DFL Rep. Tim Walz.

Demmer's campaign announced today that former Minnesota Rep. Vin Weber has signed on as campaign chairman. Weber served in Congress for Minnesota's sixth and second districts from 1981-1993 and was an adviser to Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential campaign.

Currently, Weber is co-chairman for Gov. Tim Pawlenty's Freedom First political action committee and works for D.C. lobbyist group Clark & Weinstock.

"Nobody understands southern Minnesota better than Vin Weber," Demmer said in a statement announcing Weber as chairman.

Republicans view Walz's first district seat as the most vulnerable among Democrats in Minnesota. Demmer's second quarter fundraising total of $304,000 was within striking distance of Walz's $382,000, although Walz still enjoys an $857,000-to-$250,000 cash-on-hand advantage over Demmer heading into the fall.

Another member of Demmer's campaign team is former Bachmann finance director Zandra Walcott, who left the Bachmann campaign last week shortly after Bachmann posted the highest fundraising numbers of any House member last quarter.

Demmer spokesman Jason Flohrs said Walcott and her fundraising partner Tom McGill have worked for the campaign for several months, and Walcott's move from the Bachmann campaign was unrelated to her work for Demmer.
