Margaret Anderson Kelliher has chosen longtime state and municipal budget guru John Gunyou to be her gubernatorial running mate, a source close to the campaign has confirmed.

Kelliher, the DFL-endorsed candidate for governor, will make the announcement at a 1 p.m. news conference at the Minnesota Capitol.

Gunyou served as Republican former Gov. Arne Carlson’s finance commissioner. He is now city manager of Minnetonka and was previously finance director under Minneapolis Mayor Don Fraser.

He previously worked as an executive with Minnesota Public Radio.

The pick would give Kelliher added muscle in dealing with what is expected to be a multibillion-dollar deficit in coming years. As speaker of the Minnesota House, she has already been deeply involved in budget negotiations.

Kelliher faces Mark Dayton and Matt Entenza in the DFL primary. Dayton and Entenza have yet to name running mates.
