A national organization has declared Tuesday to be National Voter Registration Day, aiming at making sure people who want to vote in November are registered in time.

There will be several events in Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State's office, although there is no deadline for registration in Minnesota. Voters can pre-register until Oct. 15; if they miss that deadline, they can register at the polls on Election Day.

The Secretary of State said more than 35 municipalities and 113 school districts will hold election on Nov. 5. A mayoral election in Minneapolis to replace incumbent R.T. Rybak has attracted 35 candidates, who will be selected by the still-new system of ranked-choice voting. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman faces three challengers.

Events on Tuesday include:

-- "Voterpalooza" on the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus, with student groups registering voters.

-- Minneapolis Mayoral Forum, 8 p.m., Coffman Memorial Union on the U of M campus.

-- Voter-registration events at a number of area colleges, including Macalester College in St. Paul and Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

-- In Duluth, the League of Women Voters will host a registration event 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holiday Center.
