Minneapolis finished third out of four cities in a poll asking where Democrats want their 2012 convention to take place.

Minneapolis trailed both Cleveland and Charlotte in a CNN poll released Tuesday, beating only St. Louis among the Democratic National Committee’s four finalists to host the 2012 convention.

While there’s no popularity vote that decides which city will get the convention, the poll still is not good news for Minneapolis, which was rumored to be “all but out of the running” earlier this month, though DNC officials say that’s not the case.

In the CNN poll, Minneapolis received 21 percent support among Democrats, trailing Cleveland at 29 percent and Charlotte at 22 percent. St. Louis was favored by 17 percent of respondents.

Minneapolis scored best with women and those older than 65, trailing Cleveland by one point in the former category and leading the latter. The city finished last, however, among men and respondents making more than $50,000.

The winning city will likely be announced in the coming weeks. In May, Republicans announced they would hold their 2012 convention in Tampa, Fla.

The CNN poll also took stock of the 2012 presidential race, finding 78 percent Democrats want President Obama at the top of the ticket in 2012, while former VP candidate Sarah Palin is supported by just 49 percent of Republicans to be the party’s 2012 nominee, a drop of 18 points from December 2008. Gov. Tim Pawlenty was not included in the poll.
