Incoming freshman Rep. Chip Cravaack was named to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Thursday, joining the committee currently run by the congressman he ousted, Rep. Jim Oberstar.

Cravaack was one of 20 new Republicans named to the committee by incoming chairman Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), who is replacing Oberstar as Republicans take control of the House.

Cravaack, a former Navy aviator and airline pilot, has expressed interest in the Transportation Committee, as well as the Armed Services and Education and Labor committees.

He will become the third straight Eighth District representative to join the Transportation Committee. The previous two, Oberstar and Democratic Rep. John Blatnik, went on to become chairmen (though it was called the Committee on Public Works under Blatnik).
