Some trivia for the political junkies out there: When he is sworn in on Jan. 3, Mark Dayton will be the oldest person to assume the office of governor in the history of Minnesota.

That's according to the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library, which often compiles facts and superlatives about the governorship.

Dayton is 63 years old. Previously, the oldest person to assume office was 56 -- Samuel R. Van Sant in 1901.

Arne Carlson and Harold LeVander were also 56, but slightly younger than Van Sant. The youngest governor was Harold Stassen, who was 31 on Election Day.

A Hot Dish review of second-termers shows they were also younger than Dayton upon re-election. Rudy Perpich, for example, was 58 when he was elected for a third time in 1986. Arne Carlson was 60 when he was re-elected in 1994.

How old was each governor when they were elected? See a list below, courtesy of the Legislative Reference Library.
