U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann's first televised discussion with MSNBC host Chris Matthews since 2008 was a strange one – to say the least.

"Will you use the subpoena power which you will have as a majority … to do what you said on my program you would do: Investigate democratic members of congress for un-American activities?" Matthews asked.

"Well I think the first thing we're going to do is set the economy in order," Bachmann said. She added that House Speaker Pelosi should extend the Bush tax cuts during the lame duck session.

"Who do you want to investigate the Democratic members of Congress for un-American thinking?" Matthews asked.

Bachmann responded that the next congress should extend the Bush tax cuts, repeal the health care reform bill, secure the borders and ensure there is no "energy tax."

Matthews grew a bit perturbed.

"Congresswoman Bachmann. Are you hypnotized tonight? Has someone hypnotized you? Because no matter what I ask you you give the same answer … Has someone put you under a trance tonight?"

Bachmann said that the "American people are the ones that are finally speaking tonight. We're coming out of our trance. Really we're coming out of our nightmare."

Matthews said Bachmann "will never be defeated on your philosophy, which is to investigate everyone for everything."
