State DFL leaders Thursday questioned the personal financial history of GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, citing an attempt to foreclose on his home in 2005 and numerous mortgage refinancings in recent years.
DFL state chairman Brian Melendez, noting that Emmer has called for government to live within its means, said the "slogan and the public record don't match up."
Referring to Wright County property records, Melendez said Emmer bought his home in Delano in 2002 for $425,000 with a $300,000 mortgage, and within two years took out two addition mortgages for $557,000. Melendez said he took out four more mortgages through early 2010, using new loans to pay off old ones.
DFL leaders said records indicated a potential balance as high as $527,000 early this year absent any regular payments he may have made over the years. They renewed a call for him to release information about his income.
Emmer did not respond to the DFL criticism. But his campaign manager, Cullen Sheehan, emphasized that Emmer's home has never been foreclosed and "he's paid his bills." He wouldn't say how much Emmer owes on the Delano home, or why a bank threatened to foreclose on it. He characterized the refinancing as similar to what other Minnesotans have done.
