Two Republican candidates for governor on Wednesday tossed competing endorsements onto the flames of their party's heated contest.

State Rep. Marty Seifert announced that Senate Minority Leader Dave Senjem is backing him; state Rep. Tom Emmer announced that Taxpayers League founder Mike Wigley would back him.

The announcements came as convention delegate selection is coming to a close. Seifert and Emmer appear to be just about tied in named delegates to the Republicans' spring convention. "It's very competitive," Seifert said.

Both men have vowed to drop out if they don't get the party endorsement.

Senjem said Seifert has the temperament to be governor. "He's calm, his demeanor is cordial, he's a give-and-take kind of person," Senjem said.

He said Seifert has "the right style, the right temperament to make things happen."

In his endorsement, Wigley praised Emmer for being unbending. "Emmer is a man who will never waver in his support of Minnesota's families and taxpayers," Wigley said in a news release.

He said Emmer has "the vision and leadership to bring Minnesota back to prosperity."

Last year, the Wigley-founded Taxpayers League named Seifert a "hero," alongside Gov. Tim Pawlenty. It named Emmer a "best friend."

Meanwhile, Emmer on Wednesday put out a fundraising e-mail decrying political compromise.

"It is time to stop compromising away our conservative ideals and time to start standing on them," Emmer wrote.

For his part, Seifert e-mailed out a campaign update in which he pledged to "continue to stand strong on behalf of Minnesota's taxpayers."
