YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed legislation Tuesday that creates a tax break to spur donations to Haitian earthquake victims.
The legislation allows Minnesotans to deduct charitable contributions to the Haiti relief effort from their 2009 state income taxes. The change applies to donations made for Haitian relief efforts between Jan. 11 and March 1. Corporations also can deduct Haiti donations from their franchise taxes.
Minnesota's legislation mirrors federal tax law. Under federal guidelines, taxpayers can deduct Haiti contributions on either their 2009 or 2010 returns.
The legislation does not apply to donations made to Chilean earthquake relief.
