ST. PAUL, Minn. - The head of Minnesota's Democratic Party said seven contributors had donations credited to a gubernatorial contender before officials realized they may have broken campaign laws.
DFL Chairman Brian Melendez said Monday that three donors got a combined $1,500 returned while the other four let the party keep contributions that temporarily benefitted candidate Margaret Anderson Kelliher. The House speaker was given credit for $4,000 in donations to the party as a way to offset costs for accessing a voter database.
Meanwhile, the party sent a letter to state campaign finance regulators acknowledging the funding arrangement was probably illegal.
Republicans have filed a formal campaign finance complaint against Kelliher and her Democratic rivals have been critical of the arrangement with the party.
