Palin stepping down as Alaska governor

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will step down July 26, a spokesman said. Palin said the "decision has been in the works for awhile."

News outlets are reporting that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced she will step down at a press conference in Wasilla.

She said the "decision has been in the works for awhile." KTUU-TV reported that there was no immediate word as to why she resigned, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008, won't finish out her first term as governor, KTUU-TV reported today. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the Governor's Picnic at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks on Saturday, July 25, Palin said
