Senate recount trial: Day 31

  • Updated: March 9, 2009 - 9:01 PM

• It was the start of week 7 of the trial in which Republican Norm Coleman is challenging DFLer Al Franken's 225-vote lead.

• Local officials identified 89 absentee-ballot envelopes containing previously missed voter registration cards and another 72 containing cards with problems in the way they were filled out. The discoveries came during a search of about 1,500 envelopes ordered by the court. Each campaign had identified about half of the ballot envelopes, which they suspected might include registration materials. The court has not ruled definitively whether the ballots will be counted.

• In court, Franken lawyers questioned Ramsey County elections chief Joe Mansky about ballots Coleman wants to count that Mansky believes were properly rejected. Coleman lawyers questioned him about ways Ramsey County's standards for counting ballots may differ from other jurisdictions.
