Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told conservation, hunting, fishing and gun-rights advocates Tuesday afternoon that Sen. John McCain is the clear choice for them over Sen. Barack Obama for president in November.
"McCain has a 30-year record in the Senate for hunting, fishing and gun rights," Pawlenty said, adding that Obama's record in these areas is "awful."
Meeting informally at the Gander Mountain store in Woodbury with a group called Sportsmen for McCain and its supporters, Pawlenty said that hunters and anglers "are such a large group that in a close election" they could decide who gains the White House.
The store was closed to the public for the event.
"John McCain needs you," Pawlenty said, adding that McCain's choice of vice-presidential nominee Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin demonstrated his commitment to their interests.
"She [Gov. Palin] hunts, she fishes," Pawlenty said. "She is fully committed tot he outdoors."
