What's at stake: At the heart of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is the requirement that almost all U.S. residents buy health insurance by 2014 or pay a tax penalty.

Background: The law, much of which has still to take effect, would extend coverage to more than 30 million people who lack it. It would be the largest expansion in the nation's social safety net in more than four decades.

The case: The main event -- arguments on the constitutionality of the mandate that most Americans obtain insurance whether they want it nor not -- will be of wide interest on Tuesday.
