FROM THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Sen. John McCain, trying to build momentum toward a reprise of his 2000 New Hampshire primary victory, is piling up endorsements. Today, fellow political maverick Sen. Joseph Lieberman -- who ran on the 2000 Democratic ticket with Al Gore -- was scheduled to announce his support for McCain. For Lieberman, now an Independent Democrat, the choice isn't too surprising; both men support the war in Iraq. Word of the endorsement follows McCain's endorsement by both the Des Moines Register and Boston Globe. GOP hopeful Ron Paul's supporters were hoping Sunday would be another fundraising bonanza for the 10-term Texas congressman. Called a "Money Bomb," their goal is to raise as much money as possible on the Internet in one day. The campaign's previous fundraiser brought in $4.2 million. At 8 p.m. CST, donations were more than $5 million, according to the campaign website, with a median donation of about $50. Republican Mitt Romney sought to deflect charges that he is a flip-flopper, insisting he had learned from experience and could be counted on to keep his campaign promises. Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," Romney also called on top rival Mike Huckabee to apologize to President Bush. In an article in the journal Foreign Affairs, Huckabee criticized Bush's foreign policy as an "arrogant bunker mentality." Huckabee said that no apology is necessary and that Romney should read the article.
