THE BILL: "Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota." The amendment would be on the ballot in 2012.
WHY NOW? Minnesota law already defines marriage in those terms, but backers of the proposal say a constitutional amendment is needed to keep court rulings from overturning it.
