DFLers still behind but gaining on Coleman in poll

U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman's lead against his DFL opponents is shrinking, according to the latest SurveyUSA poll.

Last update: July 31, 2007 - 8:21 PM

U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman's lead against his DFL opponents is shrinking, according to the latest SurveyUSA poll.

Coleman, a Republican, would still defeat comedian Al Franken or attorney Mike Ciresi by virtually the same amounts: 49 percent to 42 percent and 48 percent to 42 percent, respectively. But even against activist Jim Cohen, a virtual unknown, Coleman remains below 50 percent, getting 49 percent to Cohen's 37 percent.

In a SurveyUSA tracking poll in February, Coleman defeated Franken in a head-to-head matchup by 22 points, compared with seven in the latest poll, and thumped Ciresi by 23 points, compared with six now.

The largest swings in support, according to the poll, were among women, independents and Twin Cities voters.

The poll interviewed 700 Minnesotans between Thursday and Sunday, including 628 registered voters. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.
