ELIZABETH FLORES eflores@startribune.com November 18, 2008- St. Paul, MN - Simon Fink worked on a math competition during math class at Capitol Hill Magnet School. Fink is a "gifted" 7th grader who has Asperger's syndrome. There is a growing awareness of so-called "twice-exceptional" or "2X" students, many of whom qualify for both gifted and special education services. This fall, educators at the University of St. Thomas and four metro-area school districts are using a $490,000 federal grant to launch a five-year study aimed at developing better ways to teach 2X children, helping schools indentify them and training teachers to work with them.
