About 35 students at Hennepin Technical College spent two carpentry classes a week this year building a custom, 4-bedroom home on a city owned lot in Brooklyn Park. They learned how to schedule subcontractors, work with city code officials and install energy efficient and green materials. Their labor is free. The city paid $240,000 for materials and subcontractors and plans to sell the house for well over $300,000.
