GEESE1119 In Inver Grove Heights, Jesse Abbott, a 31-year-old real estate agent, hunts geese in his back yard. The season has declared open season on the giant Canada Geese, which have exploded in population throughout the metro area. This city has enough rural area to have hunting of the big, poopy birds, which can drop two pounds a day, sullying trails and yards, golf courses and corporate grounds. The DNR has been trying to manage the wildly growing goose population, from catch and release programs in Minneapolis and other cities, to the egg-shaking in Rochester. Abbott doesn't mind the hundreds of geese that settle behind his house, in a cornfield, but other residents and police worry not just about the poop but traffic obstacles, too, as the geese stroll across roads.
