Letter of the Day: Under fire, Meagher still epitomized leadership

Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Gonzalez / Star Tribune

Minnesota Air National Guard Col. Pat Meagher

Last update: September 22, 2009 - 11:43 AM

I served with Col. Pat Meagher in Kuwait from April through August of 2002. Reading the story about the injustice he has endured ("Winning the battle, but losing the war," Sept. 20) brings back many memories.

Col. Meagher was and is the definition of an officer and a leader. The article is accurate in detailing the distractions and the rumors our family members had to bear. What the article does not sufficiently address is how Meagher kept our members focused and absorbed the blame for every decision, whether made by him or not.

I would deploy anywhere at any time with Col. Meagher, knowing I would be treated with respect and my family assured I would return home safe.

BLAIR SORVARI, CHAMPLIN
