The majestic bluff-top Fort Snelling Upper Post is a Twin Cities treasure that has been allowed to deteriorate for no good reason.

With the millions of dollars invested in the Hiawatha light rail corridor, the Lindbergh Terminal and the Mall of America, it's a wonder that no one has recognized the rich historical value and commercial potential of the Upper Post.

Why not restore some of these lovely buildings as offices for state and federal workers, to relieve some of the crowding in the nearby Whipple Building? How about restoring the old post hospital as a luxury hotel?

Instead of spending our tax dollars on $50,000 drinking fountains that will be vandalized in six months, or a $900 million stadium that will be obsolete in 20 years, is there any good reason not to invest in preserving our state's cultural and architectural heritage for future generations to enjoy?
