Northstar line is a financial drain
The Northstar ridership numbers reported in a July 21 story don’t mean anything to me (“Ridership rises on Northstar”). This commuter rail was promoted as an alternative to driving to and from work Monday through Friday in order to reduce congestion on the roads. Were the numbers reported just the Monday-through-Friday totals, or did they include the weekend baseball and concert riders? Surely, we didn’t spend millions of dollars to shuttle sports and concert fans around. It’s time to stop mincing words. Every time we run this train, we lose money.

Lynn Rogers deserves the state’s support
I’m sad and concerned about the demand that Lynn Rogers, the outstanding biologist at the North American Bear Center in Ely, must remove the collars from the bears he is studying (“Bear expert files suit vs. DNR,” July 24). I’m a Twin Cities native now residing in California. Last year I brought my young son to Ely for a week so we could study at the world-renowned center and other sites. While our family has traveled to many national parks populated by bears, I have never come across the kind of cutting-edge information about black bears that I did at the center. It’s difficult to believe that Minnesota does not appreciate the jewel it holds. Instead of tranquilizing bears to collar them, sometimes leading to greater bear aggression and harm, Rogers is brilliant in finding humanistic methods to collar the bears to study their behaviors.

Not suitable to be New York City’s mayor
It is truly hard to believe that anyone could possibly believe Anthony Weiner is enough of an adult to take on the responsibility of managing New York City (“Weiner faces growing calls to quit mayor’s race,” July 25).
