Not being a sports fan, I cannot say whether Tubby Smith was a good or a bad coach. I do note that he had a winning record and brought the Gophers to the NCAA tournament three times in six years. It doesn’t take a sports fan to recognize the pattern of expensive early buyouts of coach’s contracts at the University of Minnesota.
Perhaps it is time for the Legislature to intervene in this fiasco and put the brakes on U funding. If the university has money to burn, let’s give it less.

For the money needed to buy out Tubby Smith and gang, nearly 100 undergraduate students could attend classes for four years at the University of Minnesota for free. Imagine a university that is in the business of education, as opposed to the business of sports.
