Letter of the day: U.N. must get tough with Myanmar thugs

Last update: May 12, 2008 - 6:49 PM

Time and time again, the United Nations proves false the notion that nations working together can prevent atrocities against humanity.

The latest outrage? The United Nations continues to stand by as millions suffer and die in Myanmar because an obtuse military dictatorship blockades, then seizes, aid for those in need.

Shame on China, Vietnam, South Africa and Russia for rejecting a motion by France to invoke the U.N.'s "responsibility to protect" concept. The time has long passed to apprehend Myanmar's military junta and rush needed aid to survivors of the cyclone.

How many more millions must perish thanks to U.N. inaction?

KYLE CHRISTENSEN, Rosemount

About Opinion Exchange

Opinion Exchange is produced by the Editorial Department, which is dedicated to hosting the discussion on a range of issues of interest to Star Tribune readers online and in print. In its new format, it's our hope that Opinion Exhange will create a more dynamic dialogue between Star Tribune readers and the Editorial Board. Many individual posts will be written and signed by members of the Editorial Board and will reflect their own opinions. Daily editorials will continue to represent the institutional voice of the newspaper and be researched and written by the Editorial Department, which is independent of the newsroom.
