On New Year's Day, many of us today (with the help of some aspirin) will be thinking of our resolutions for the days ahead.

But for most people though, these resolutions will become history after only a few hours or days.

Here is the tip of the day: Replace your usual resolutions with a resolve to become a better person this year.

Here is the recipe: Be encouraging, not discouraging. Frown less, smile more. Talk less and listen more. Give help when someone needs it rather than looking the other way.

Instead of screening phone calls, pick up when a family member, friend or other loved one calls. You may never get the chance to talk to that person again.

Be a better person is a doable resolution -- one that will help you, others and our country. Happy New Year.
