Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney recently made the derogatory suggestion that "even Jimmy Carter" would have ordered the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden. People should come to know what Carter did before and during his presidency.
A graduate of the Naval Academy, he worked on nuclear submarine technology and served for 10 years, leaving only to take over the family peanut farm after the death of his father.
Using science -- and, as he has said, daily prayer -- he made the farm profitable and did very well for two decades before entering politics.
In 1980, after the failed attempt to rescue the hostages in Iran, he gave a simple, six-minute address to the American people. Using the word "I" often, he explained what happened and took full responsibility. No spin. Just taking responsibility as commander in chief -- period.
I can only imagine how our country would be better if we had more politicians possessing President Carter's commitment to country, faith, hard work, character and personal accountability.
