The recent deaths of the four women traveling on Interstate 94 on their way back to college were preventable, and we as Minnesotans are to blame.

Those tragic losses could have been prevented by the use of cable barriers. Such barriers prevent vehicles from crossing the median and striking vehicles going in the opposite direction.

In the past few years, parts of our highway system have had cable barriers installed, including sections of I-94. The argument used against having this system on all highways is the cost.

We are more than willing to spend public funds on nonessential projects, but we are unwilling to support funding for something as simple but life-saving as cable barriers. Shame on us for allowing this to happen.
