STOP ATTACKS ON TEACHERS

Teachers, staff and students in Minnesota's public schools are doing amazing things. I just came home from my fourth-grade daughter's play at Highlands Elementary School in Edina.

Proud parents, grandparents and teachers of about 60 elementary students crammed the school's gym. The hard work put in by my daughter's talented teachers and the rest of the school staff was obvious.

As I sat there, I thought about how lucky we are to live in Minnesota. Our state has some of the best schools in the country. We consistently have great SAT and ACT scores. We have some of the best graduation rates, too.

There's so much positive news to tell about Minnesota schools that it's hard to see daily attacks on public school teachers and unions from conservatives. Taking away teachers' rights, busting unions, alternative licensure and tax vouchers for private schools undermine these employees. Instead of attacking teachers and public employees, let's get behind them.
