Letter of the day: St. Thomas seems to have lost its way

Last update: November 6, 2007 - 5:39 PM

Threatening notes slipped under doors. Racist graffiti placed on campus posters. A white hatemonger welcomed. A black peacemaker turned away. A commencement speech made to denigrate women.

I am trying to understand how these recent scenes from the University of St. Thomas fit with the university's mission of liberal thinking, its history of diversity and the legacy of St. Thomas Aquinas. The university seems to have lost its way. I just hope the administration is still focused on the students, because if it is, donors and supporters will follow. But it doesn't work the other way around.
