An 18-year-old man was fatally shot at a busy St. Paul intersection Monday afternoon.

The man was walking near Rice Street and W. Winnipeg Avenue about 4:30 p.m. when he was struck by shots fired from across the street. Police received several 911 calls and found the man lying in a corner convenience store, said St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders. Paramedics and officers tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.

Investigators don't believe the shooting was random, Linders said. It is the city's 17th homicide and 110th shooting of the year.

"This was just an incredibly dangerous situation," he said. "It's a busy thoroughfare, and school buses are passing by. It's fortunate more people weren't hurt or killed."

More than 30 people quickly gathered at the scene, and investigators are asking for any of them to call police. The number is 651-266-5650.

Linders said police are frustrated with the gun violence: "People know who are carrying guns illegally and shooting people. You can call us anonymously. You can save a life."
