Chelgren, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Curtis), age 99, of Mpls, passed away Sat., Jan. 13 at Augustana Care Center. Born on May 5, 1907 in Kewanee, IL to Will & Lida Curtis. She was educated in St. James, MN. Graduated in 1928 magna cum laude from Hamline University. Taught English and music in Hallock, MN. Married George A. Chelgren, Sup. of Schools in Kennedy, MN in 1931. Elizabeth also taught music in Karlstad and St. James, MN. She directed choirs, taught piano lessons, and accompanied dance classes in Mpls in later years. From 1959 until 1972 she was Director of Christian Education at Messiah Lutheran Church in Mpls, then Director of Older Adult Ministries there from 1977 to 1988. Retired at the age of 81. Preceded in death by her parents; brothers, J. Harold, Leslie and Bruce; sister, Lucile; husband, George Chelgren. Survived by daughters, Jane (John) McFadden, Columbus, OH and Marilyn (Thomas) Dashiell, Carol Stream, IL; grandchildren, John D. (Kristi) and Kevin McFadden, Lea (Joshua) Langhoff and Aaron (Cynthia) Dashiell; great- grandchildren, Jack Erick, Jenna May, Kara Elizabeth, Zachary George and Mary Gretchen; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and many friends. Elizabeth was respected for her intellect and her musical abilities, appreciated for her optimistic outlook & gracious personality, admired for her tenacity & endurance, and loved by all who knew her. Funeral service 1 PM Thursday, Jan. 18 at Augustana Care Center Chapel (free valet parking available), with visitation 11:30 AM until time of service. Interment Lakewood Cemetery.
