Field, Harold D., Jr. 8/21/27 - 10/31/14 of Minneapolis and Balsam Lake, WI, Commodore of the Fleet, wonderful husband, father and grandfather, accomplished attorney and committed citizen, died after a long illness. Born in St. Paul to Gladys and Harold Field, Sr., he is survived by Joyce, his wife of 64 years, sons Stephen (Irene), Larry (Jill) and Richard (Joy), grandsons Jeff, Matthew, David, Michael, Ben, Evan and Jon, and brothers Martin of Bangkok, Thailand and John (Carol) of San Francisco. A graduate of St. Paul Academy, MIT and Yale Law School, Hal began his career in New York with the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and returned to the Twin Cities, where he practiced at Leonard, Street and Deinard for 55 years until his retirement in 2007. A consummate professional and wise counselor, he was listed in Best Lawyers in America since the publication's inception and was the recipient of the Hennepin County Bar Association's Professionalism award in 1994. Always civic minded, he was on the board of directors of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for eight years and its chairman from 1973-1975 during the taconite case. He also served on boards including the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Citizens League and Minnesota Council of American Electronics Association and on the national board of the Lawyers Alliance for World Security. An avid sailor, Hal learned his craft on Lake Minnetonka and was a member of the MIT sailing team (where he wooed his bride on the Charles). He brought windsurfing to Balsam Lake and sailed there for more than 45 years, as recently as this August.
