Buran, David John, M.D. David John Buran died peacefully on Friday, October 10 following a very brief illness with the same dignity and style that defined his life. "Courage" was his mantra when given the diagnosis and "courage plus unbounded love" was the mantra adopted by his many friends and dear family as we gathered together providing stunning moments of music and memories during his final week with us assisted by Park Nicollet Methodist Hospice caregivers. Born on December 22, 1931 to Rev. John and Dorothy Buran, David lived in several midwest towns, graduating from Menomonie, WI high school. An alum of Carleton College (where he met Ann, his wife of 60 years), he graduated from George Washington School of Medicine and interned at Milwaukee County General Hospital. After serving two years as a Captain in the U.S. Army, he practiced with the Hildebrand Clinic in Neenah/Menasha, WI. David specialized in otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota and chose Park Nicollet (then known as St. Louis Park Medical Center) to begin his distinguished 34-year career as an ear-nose-throat surgeon. He served on the Board of Governors at Park Nicollet and was chief of his department for many years while pioneering systems for better health care delivery. Music was in his marrow. He sang baritone in the Plymouth Congregational Church Choir for 48 years and the VocalEssence Chorus for 25 years. He became known as the "Voice Doctor" because of his extraordinary care of Twin Cities and international singers and actors. Always involved in helping others, he served on many boards in the community including Pathways, OLLI, United Theological Seminary and Plymouth Church where he served as Moderator. David is survived by his wife Ann, daughter Ginny and husband Dwayne, four grandsons - Kevin, Alex, Teddy and Michael - and brother Dick and wife Helen. He was preceded in death by daughter, Connie. Memorials are preferred to Plymouth Congregational Church or VocalEssence. A service to celebrate David's life will take place at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet, Minneapolis on Monday, October 13 at 2:00 PM.
