Shapiro, Stanley W., MD Age 81, of Minnetonka, passed away August 3, 2014. Survived by wife, Berta; son, Brian (Susan Ranney); daughters, Elisa Hunter, Jan Shapiro, and Caryn Shapiro; grandchildren, Benjamin Shapiro, Rebecca Shapiro, Talia, Hannah Rose, and Miriam Alexander; sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne & Fred Nathanson; sister-in-law, Eva Fishman; loving nieces and hundreds of people whom he helped to lead more satisfying lives. Stan maintained a private psychiatric practice for more than 40 years. He was a long time consultant to mental health centers including Northwood Residential Treatment Center in Duluth, Cambridge State Hospital, Maximum Security Hospital at St. Peter, Minneapolis Family and Children's service, Family Life Mental Health Center, and Veteran's Hospital. In 1996 he was awarded Life Fellowship to the American Psychiatric Association for significant contributions in psychiatry. He maintained memberships in many professional associations and held professional offices as well as serving on the board of directors of several mental health associations. Upon retirement he picked up a paintbrush and became a prolific watercolorist. He also became a Mason and was appointed State Lodge Education Officer. In the past he wrote many articles which were widely read. He was also a member of Scottish Rite. Memorial service Tuesday, August 5, at 12:30 pm at BET SHALOM CONGREGATION, 13613 Orchard Rd., Minnetonka. Private family burial. Masonic service Thursday, August 7, at 1:00 pm at Albert Pike Lodge, 905 Mainstreet, Hopkins. Memorials preferred to Bet Shalom Congregation, MDS Research at U of MN Foundation, McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. SE, Suite 500, Minneapolis, MN 55455-2010, any environmental organization, or donor's choice.
