McNamara, Robert J. "Bob" age 82 of Edina. Survived by loving wife of 55 years, Annette; children, Anne Marie Rogers (Britt), Suzy McNamara, and Bob McNamara Jr. (Katy); brothers, Bernie (Lana) and Stanley (Linda); also survived by Annette's family the Cunninghams. Preceded in death by brothers, Don, Jim, and Pinky. Bob grew up in Hastings, Minn., was a member of the National Guard, also was in the Army as a paratrooper. He played football for the Gophers from 1951-54 and also played two seasons for the Gopher basketball team. Bob was inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame in 1993.He was a First Team All-American halfback and team MVP in 1954. After his playing days at the U of M, he became an All-Star running back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and also played for the Denver Broncos. He worked tirelessly as a fundraiser for his beloved University of Minnesota, and was instrumental in the building of TCF Bank Stadium, the construction of the Baseline Tennis Center, Siebert Field and various other facilities on campus. He was also a prominent voice in the 2001 Save Gopher Sports Campaign, which saved mens gymnastics, men's golf and women's golf varsity sports at Minnesota. Bob was a season-ticket holder for Gopher football for nearly 60 years, as well as a longtime season-ticket holder for Gopher Basketball and men's hockey. He also supported five endowed scholarships at Minnesota. He was also involved in many other organizations including the Minneapolis Park Board, St Anthony club and Dunkers. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend and loved by all who knew him. Visitation 4-7 PM Friday, July 25, Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th St. & Vernon Ave at Hwy 100, Edina. Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Saturday, July 26, with visitation beginning at 10 AM at the Church of St. Patrick, Valley View at Gleason Road, Edina.
