Gallup, James Douglas Age 85, of Maple Grove, passed away peacefully, on December 5, 2017 as he was in the midst of recovery from a fall in his home. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather Jim was born in Princeton and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1950. As class president, he helped organize many reunions over 66 years. He earned a bachelor's degree in Speech and Theatre from the University of Minnesota and as an Air Force ROTC grad, left for flight training at Marana AFB outside Tucson, AZ. Upon completion, the future Captain was stationed at Travis AFB near San Francisco and flew the "heavies," C-124's to Tokyo, Korea, the Philippines and Guam in the days after the Korean War. In 1958 he became the third member of the ownership group of Musicland Record Stores, opening the company's fifth store in downtown Duluth. Jim spent 23 years with Musicland, moving from Duluth to Tonka Bay, and helping the company to become the largest record retailer in the world. In 1982 he moved on to manage the Twin Cities region for Godfather's Pizza and also owned the Red Wing Godfather's restaurant. The final 12 years of his business career were spent as a property/casualty specialist with Prudential. Jim lived the two passions of his life: music and flying. He was a private pilot for 47 years. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancie. Survived by son Kirk (Kathi); grandchildren Geoff and Laura; and treasured nieces, nephews and cousins. A visitation will be Friday, January 19, 2018 from 4:00-7:00PM at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, 5000 West 50th St. A memorial service will be Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Chapel at Forest Hill Cemetery, 2516 Woodland Ave., Duluth.
