Poppitz, Michael E. age 69, of Chaska, MN, died Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at his home. Mike was born May 15, 1948 in Shakopee, MN, to Orwin "Hubble" and Lorraine (Vogel) Poppitz, one of five children. Baptized and confirmed at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Chaska. He graduated from Chaska High School in 1966 and attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD. He was a self-employed carpenter for many years, a member of the Victoria Lions for over 25 years and former coach of the Carver Black Sox in the late 70's. Mike was best known as the pillar of the Victoria Vics baseball team. For 36 years he played, scouted, coached and managed the Vic's. He was the steadfast and all-encompassing grounds crew of his namesake, Poppitz Field dedicated in 2009. His knowledge and passion for anything baseball was undeniable. At the end of each season Mike filled his free time ice-fishing and talking about his plans for the upcoming baseball season. Known for his candor and impish sense of humor he was often described as rough around the edges, softening only for his beloved grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Brett Battcher. Survived by his children, Shelly (Shawn) Battcher of Arlington, Troy (Lesley) of Chaska, Clark (Stacey) of Shakopee; grandchildren, Brittany, Pehrnel, Jacob, Thomas, Adeline, Lorraine, Ryan and Maggie; siblings, Rick (Rita) of Carver, Mark (Betty) of Plymouth, Bob (Cindy) of Chaska, Diane Poppitz of Shakopee; the Victoria Vics baseball family; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 16, 2017, 10:30 AM at the Moravian Church, 115 E. 4th Street, Chaska, with Pastor Mike Eder officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held at the Dahlgreen Golf Club, 6940 Dahlgren Road, Chaska, MN. From 12:30 - 5:00 pm.
